Remember to use painter’s tape so you can easily remove it from the wall when you’re done. Have the cutout people prepared and then let kids go to town with some white yarn and googly eyes. STEM building challenges make great Halloween activities. Give this classic example a Halloween twist by using gummy pumpkins in place of marshmallows. Keep little learners busy by taping a large paper ghost with an open mouth to a doorway. Have kids feed letter magnets through the mouth as you call them out.
My writing prompts are available in a few formats but my students love the task card format the best. They grab the card they want and a genre-specific themed planning sheet and they are ready to plan and write. When they finish and are ready to publish their writing, they grab a themed publishing paper and complete their final draft. When I first started teaching fifth grade, I was seriously bummed about the lack of seasonal activities and centers for upper elementary. It was pretty much limited to writing prompts and crossword puzzles/word searches.

Some years, I use these festive buckets in place of the “Caludron Pumpkin Toss” game. You can toss virtually anything into the buckets… giant spiders, pumpkins, beanbag ghosts. I found these sand buckets at Michael’s, and added the numbers using my Silhoutte Cameo. Classroom ideas, free printables, and great teacher ideas right here.
Let kids create and useHalloween mummy cans to hold their school supplies in on their desks. Make a counting book about spiders for the children to count, color, and create fingerprint spiders on a web. Use a Halloween writing lesson to build important vocabulary and writing skills with a spooky subject – a haunted house. Have the spiders begun to leave webs around the school and grounds? Take the opportunity to teach your class all about spiders.
Halloween Crossword Puzzle and Word Search
Upper elementary students can definitely have just as much (if not more!) Halloween fun as the younger students. Here are some of my favorite Halloween activities and student treats for the Halloween season. Usually, the school Halloween parties that we run are broken into small groups where the kids rotate through activities. So we’ve broken this class party down into 2 games, a craft, and a snack that they can do in small groups. For all of my class parties, I reach out to our wonderful community of parents to help with donating the supplies needed for our party snack and activities. For this DIY classroom Halloween party game, I printed four sets, two on paper and two on white card stock.
Glue the paper skeleton onto a large strip of black construction paper (glue two 12×18 pieces together) or bulletin board paper. You’ll want to make two of these mats and laminate them for durability. You’ll also want to laminate the card stock pieces. I also traced the outline of each piece onto thick, white foam. I cut out the foam pieces and glued them to the bottom of the appropriate bone. This helped make the game pieces a little more durable and less slippery on the skeleton mats.

I’ve found that Aileen’s tacky glue works the best. Sometimes, we add magnets to the back so that the parents can hang ol’ Frank on the fridge. Moving right on to reading, I love using seasonal/holiday themed reading activities to review skills AND engage my readers. The students love reading these high-interest stories. One activity that is definitely a staple in my classroom is the use of math centers. We actually do math center rotations two to three days a week during math instruction and my students always love them.
Halloween Math and Literacy Resource Bundle - 4th Grade
Crowned with orange cream cheese frosting and studded with chocolate chips, these pumpkin muffins make a delicious fall treat. Stuff empty plastic bottles with cotton balls to turn them into ghost bowling pins, then have fun knocking them down. You can even turn this into a math activity by having kids tally or graph the number of pins they knock down on each turn. Teach your students how our joints, muscles, and tendons work together to move our hands using just construction paper, plastic straws, string, and tape. Pucker up and blow some strange and eerie ghosts, using straws and white paint. Add googly eyes and a mouth with a black marker to give them each their own personality.

We didn’t come up with this hilarious writing prompt, but we do have 19 more ideas plus free printable writing paper for you to use! Early readers and spellers can get some practice at initial letter sounds with this cute idea.
You can use regular sized Popsicle sticks, but I like to use the mini ones from Lowe Cornell. I just hot glue the sticks to two Popsicle sticks running horizontally across the back. The kiddos will paint the front using green tempra paint or green acrylic paint. Glue on some googley eyes, and then draw a mouth and stitch mark with a black permanent marker.

You could definitely use these skeletons here and here and here. Children will learn all about cause and effect as they experiment with potion-making in this Halloween themed activity.

I also love using Halloween Themed Paired Passages. This resource includes two themed and connected paired passages . Each set of passages comes in a traditional worksheet format and in an interactive notebook format. The students love the interactive notebook version.
